Scottish Fishing Rights
This topic is a justifiably sore point for the fisherfolk of Scotland, and they have every right to be concerned and even angry when their honest livelihood is threatened in any way shape or form.
I thought about it.. and there must be a solution, as we in the independence movement support both the EU and the fisherfolk. Their cause, as I have said is righteous, so independence shouldn't cost them anything, save the hard 5 to 10 years ahead we all except will happen post-independence. It will cost us all, but that's the price for building Scotland anew.
The EU doesn't have to impose quotas.. but it does so we can all eat, and fisherfolk aren't daft and know that species extinction is a real threat. But what if there was a way to supply mind boggling amounts of Cod, without quotas, and with much much profit? While the whole time bringing down the cost to the consumers..enticing them to buy even more.. have I piqued your interest? read on..
Scotland has.. a staggering amount of lakes (lochs in Scots) over 3000 in fact. Undoubtedly these will most likely be freshwater.
If fisherfolk brought their boats on land to the Scottish lakes, they instantly do not have any quota. The EU can no longer limit how much they fish, If those Scottish lakes are owned or partially owned by those fisherfolk (or leased from the Scottish Government) the fish contained within become the property of its owner/part owner/lessee. And if you breed the fish yourself, you can make an unlimited supply to sell, bringing the cost down for consumers who in turn buy more and you make more money.. now I know what your thinking.. 'WHOA there sparky! Cod is a saltwater fish! I don't think fisherfolk will give up their fish supper profits..'
Actually 'Burbot' is Cod but.. freshwater. The only freshwater 'proper' Cod fish. They enjoy frigid temperatures to breed which Scotland can provide.
So.. we have:
1. Fisherfolk can fish as much as they please in land without quotas as they are responsible to restock the fish through breeding and feeding.
2. Leasing a lake meaning they release the fish, using the boats to feed and catch.
3. They can vote for independence knowing that upon rejoining the EU, the EU cannot stop them.
4. The profits don't depend on if a species has bred enough that year, the yield of fish depends on how much they feed them and slightly the weather.
Is this a good solution? I feel confident it meets all the interested parties needs. Sure sure, you diversify.. have a few boats meeting the quota, but have a inland boat and lease of a Scottish lake, because as we all know, the SNP will bend over backwards to please the fisherfolk, as this issue is the one and only righteous wound to independence. I would say, it often gets the heartstrings pulled of many a nationalist, as we do not mean harm to ourselves, our country-folk. I am sure the SNP are aware of this, and due to this may well give the fisherfolk whatever they want.. vis a vis.. the above.
peace
