End 2000 Years of Enmity with a Hard Border .. or Naivety and Wishful Hopefulness
Hi
I have been a nationalist 35 years of my 46y years of life.. since 11 years old. I was one of the 300 or so to vote SNP in my local area when I turned 18yo and the SNP didn't have the success it does today.
I believe in an independent Scotland. I have been impressed by FM Sturgeon's skill and defense of Scotland.. but one thing bothers me, when The Tiosh* speaks about keeping an open border she sounds to me like Biff, misquoting a saying out of Back to the Future.
Bold claims Dava! ..
D: .. so let's unravel this shall we?
The reason to maintain business links to England on the face of it seems many.. the influx of cash, trading energy for more cash, tourism and being kind to each other post divorce. But all that is a fantasy!!
We already know what Westminster is like.. haven't we been complaining about them for decades.. how can the FM be so BLIND?? Of course once Scotland leaves they will cause us as much trouble as they can, just like they do now.
The Tiosh is asking us to trust Westminster in negotiation, but at the same time we are not to trust them with our country. It doesn't make logical sense.
The English won't have any other choice but to come to us for their energy, Scotland is the power house for energy for the whole of Europe and finally they have to pay us a fair price for it, and not get a groupon discount because: Union.
Tourism.. use a passport and join a lane. Problem solved.
Businesses having a problem with Scotland leaving and having border checks on goods, this will sting a bit, but what we get in return is worth much much more.. we FINALLY get peace.. after 2000 years of enmity PEACE.. Gauls vs the Saxons.. Gauls vs the Anglo Saxons.. Scots vs the English, then subjugation to the English for 300 + years.
But then again remember.. no checks from Norway, Ireland, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany.. via the Ferry links we are setting up just now.
A hard border means we can move on and just forget about the English. The Tiosh sounds like Alec Salmond talking about sharing currency when she talks about a soft border.. it's pure fantasy.. like a teenager talking about marrying their favourite actor.
Trying to be friendly to group of people who have been hostile to us for 2000 years.. and here's the problem; we can't control them, so we have no leverage. Look at what they do with the EU! We have no leverage to get the things Tiosh dreams of and that a practical fact. Leverage over the English is a pipe dream of epic proportions because they will just do whatever they like.
Do we simply ignore what they are doing to the EU?
Ireland did well in the last 20 or so years.. the English just forgot they existed, this seems like a good deal to me.. English just forget Scotland exists.
Trade Negotiations post Independence
I want: Nothing from the English.
But when you hear the SNP politicians talk about all this, they sound like its a genteel affair .. if you know your history, you know the battle of Stirling Bridge.. the opposing forces thought it was to be a genteel affair.. William Wallace showed otherwise.
Now WE are the ones acting genteel when we should be cutting off access to our soft under belly with a hard border and no negotiations.
D: What are the benefits really?
The Pound was the sweetest plum in the pudding.. the rest was just add-on junk.. so we are going to negotiate for the junk that's worth what you get in your change for a Happy Meal??
Q: Wait!.. don't just skip over those assets.. what are they and how does this all work?
All the joint assets are: All Government Buildings (inc NHS, Fire Service) and Military Buildings, Armories, Vehicles and Weapons. The BBC. The Bank of England.
1. Owning 1/3rd of the BoE is useless unless you also own the Pound Sterling.
2. The BBC are a Unionist mouthpiece, sooner we set up our own National TV service the better. Licence free I hope. Abolish the TV Licence. Advertiser funded.
3. We get the military and governmental property (inc everything, vehicle weapons, NHS, Fire Service) that are on our side and the English get whats one their side.. except for Trident, they can ram that right up their nose and get it out my Country. Dumped it on the West Coast, jist ootside Glæsga sa yon English kin feel important.. flip!
So each one is a moot point.. and in exchange for this daft moot point we are expected to take a share of the Kingdom's national debt? 100's of billions of pounds for what??
THERE'S NOTHING LEFT WORTH WANTING.. the pound was it.
Now we're going to have our own currency 'The Pound Scots'.. and EVEN if we chose to go Euro, which is a lateral move.. Pound Scots is more risk for more reward.. Euro is the safest way forward all round.. our adventure with the Pound Sterling is at an end.
The English have said no.. and we have faced up to reality.
This is what the Tiosh has to do.. face up to reality that a soft border or no border is a pipe dream and only damages the self respect of Scots. Like we are yet again worthless and some off brand supermarket English.
A hard border stops that dead.. it becomes a symbol.. never gain will Westminster rule us! Never again will we be some cut price English cultural colony! A symbol we will have self respect as a nation again!
peace
Dava
*Tiosh.. from MacKintosh, Mac kin Tiosh 'Sons of the Chief' so The Tiosh means 'The Chief'. Also like The Taoiseach or Teshoȝh for Ireland.
